Portraits of terror victims
Gili and Avi played together on Ashdod veteran’s soccer team.   Mazel was the class beauty.   Danny was happy after the birth of his first grandson.

Yesterday’s terror attack in Ashdod took ten lives when two suicide bombers from the Gaza Strip infiltrated the Port of Ashdod and exploded in two different locations.
Gil Abutbul, 38, and Avi Avraham, 32, from Ashdod
The Ashdod Sports Club soccer team suffered a double loss yesterday.  Gil Abutbul a goalie who remained a child in spirit, and Avi Avraham.  Tonight, instead of playing the scheduled game, the team will accompany their friends to their final resting place.
“Gili was a great guy.  The whole team loved him.  Soccer teams often suffer from cliques and internal competition, but everybody loved Gili, who always smiled and was always happy”, eulogized Naor Galili, the former Manager of the club and a player on the veterans’ team.
Avi Avraham was a member of the extended team.  Manager Yossi Knafo remembered them, “Two wonderful guys, among the best on the team.  Avi has practiced or played for a while.  I understood that he preferred to spend time with his new wife.  Gili was our goalie, an excellent goalie with a child’s spirit”.
Tonight’s game has been cancelled.  “Instead of being happy together and doing what we love to do, we will go to the funerals of two friends who really loved soccer and the team.  It is hard to express our sadness in words”, Galili explained.
Ophir Damari, 31, from Rehovot
“I don’t know how to tell a child who isn’t even two-years-old, that his beloved father will never return because he was killed in a terrorist attack”, said Ophir Damari’s sister, Merav Bachar.Ophir has two young children: Noa, 22 months old and Guy, only seven months old.  He worked in the port and his sister explained that the family became concerned as soon as they heard about the attack in the media.  “We began to contact the hospitals and inquire if he was among the injured.  When they said that he was not, we understood that he had suffered the worst fate”.
Danny Asulin, 51, from Ashdod
Danny Asulin had worked in the Ashdod Port for 30 years and was a well-known figure there.  He worked in the mechanical equipment department.  Two weeks ago he returned from a professional training program in Germany and he was scheduled to attend another in Finland later this month.  “He was so excited about the trip.  Who would have thought that it would end like this”, said a neighbor.  He is survived by his wife Negba, a daughter Adva, a son Nes and grandson Ido.
Morris Tubul, 30, from Ashdod
Yesterday afternoon Morris ate lunch at the C Moll shopping mall with his best friends, Haim and David Revivo.  Scarcely 90 minutes after they separated, a terrorist took Morris’s life.  Today he was supposed to have signed a contract to purchase an apartment.  Friends described Morris and David as people who did everything together.  Morris had just received tenure after working at the port for 4 years.  He was content with life, was beginning to settle down and had decided to buy an apartment.  He is survived by his mother, Lillian, and three brothers, Sammy, Oren and Shai.
Mazal Marciano, 30, from Ashdod
Mazal Marciano lived not far from Morris Tubul and they went to school together at the Comprehensive High School in Ashdod.  She was a manager in the office of a meat products company across the street from the site of the second blast.
Moshe Hendler, 29, from Rehovot
Avraham Hendler rushed to his son’s workplace in the Ashdod Port as soon as he heard the blast and immediately saw Moshe was among the victims.  A senior technician in the cranes department, Moshe Hendler had just finished his shift and was getting ready to shower and change his clothes before going home to his wife Merav and six month old daughter, Tal.  One of the terrorists asked him for some water.  Hendler offered him a jerry can, seconds later the terrorist blew himself up.
Other victims of the attack include: Tzion Dahan, 30, from Ashdod; Avi Suisa, 56, from Kiryat Malahi and Avraham Pinhas Zilberman, 46, from Tel Aviv.

A real situation
Sewage soaked roof
www.counterpunch.org/    By PAUL de ROOIJ    May 19, 2005
In 1989, a group of armed settlers invaded a house in the Old City of Jerusalem and occupied the top floor; the Palestinian family managed to fend off the settlers from the ground floor.
The Palestinian house owner sought police help to evict the invaders, but was fined NIS 500 for "disturbing the peace".
During the ensuing months, the settlers set out to make the Palestinian family's life miserable by throwing garbage onto their courtyard, pounding on the floor at night, and throwing boiling water onto the children when they ventured near the front of the house.
The settlers eventually drilled a hole through the sewage pipes so that the dirty water would drip onto the living room/kitchen below where the eleven family members were now forced to sleep.
At least two adults were forced to stay at home all the time to prevent the settlers from invading the rest of the house.
The family resisted for more than a year, building several contraptions to stem the sewage flow onto their ground floor living quarters.
I visited this family several times and witnessed the menacing, bearded, armed settlers asking the Palestinian homeowner when he was going to leave.
Furthermore, this type of incident has been repeated thousands of times throughout the occupied territories where settlers or the army have invaded and confiscated Palestinian houses.
Such incidents are worse than house demolitions, because in addition to their dispossession, Palestinian families are subjected to abuse and humiliation.
While house demolitions are an impersonal affair conducted by soldiers with explosives or Caterpillar bulldozers, the home invasions are an exercise in calculated humiliation and intimidation — this is up close and personal.
It would seem that if the intent is to steal the houses, then this could be attained in one fell swoop.
The fact that the settler or soldier sieges last for months indicates that their purpose is also to drive out Palestinians from the area; it is not enough to deprive families of their houses or businesses — the intent is to drive them out of their cities and "Israel" altogether.
Besides the house under siege, the message is also meant for the neighboring Palestinian families.

Israeli Arabs fear for the future

Ethnic tensions are simmering in Jerusalem
Amid the high emotion of Israel's evacuation from the Gaza Strip and four West Bank enclaves, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's acknowledgement of why the settlements were untenable has passed with little comment.
"The changing reality in the country [...] required a change," Mr Sharon said in his televised speech last week.
"We cannot hold on to Gaza forever. More than a million Palestinians live there and double their number with each generation."
In other words, demography — not security — is driving the so-called disengagement plan.
This has long been the explanation of most analysts, but it is the first time it has been articulated so clearly by Mr Sharon.
Israel's dilemma is, how can it be a Jewish state if there is a Palestinian Arab majority residing in territory under Israeli control?
The demographic struggle manifests itself in several ways, some of them constructed in steel and concrete — the "strengthening of settlements" and the West Bank barrier — but other manifestations are more subtle.
Divided population
Take, for example, Beit Safafa — a dilapidated Arab village long since engulfed by the southern expansion of Jerusalem — now surrounded on all sides by Jewish settlements and neighbourhoods.
map of west and east Jerusalem
The village is famous for straddling the old post-1948 Green Line between Israel and Jordanian-controlled West Bank, with both halves coming under Israeli control after the 1967 war.
That means about half its residents have Israeli citizenship while the rest are West Bank Palestinians with Israeli-issued Jerusalem residency papers.
In the past, the former have always felt superior to the latter — enjoying rights and privileges as "Israelis" that their "occupied" cousins lacked.
"That is all changing," says one Israeli Arab resident.   "Jews used to view us with respect, now they look at us the enemy, like people from the West Bank."
The speaker, and everyone else I met in Beit Safafa, spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared the consequences of getting on the wrong side of the Israeli authorities.
Sticking together
Residents cite a litany of official government measures, as well as their daily interaction with Israeli Jews, that underline a clear message.
"They are all saying the same thing: It's not your land; what are you doing here?" says one young man, a sound engineer.
"Most of my friends were Jews," the engineer says.   "We used to do concerts together and went to parties.   But recently they don't want me around anymore.   They are more sympathetic to the Jewish settlers, their own kind."
Recently they don't want me around any more.   They are more sympathetic to the Jewish settlers, their own kind
Arab Israeli
Many of the older residents talk fondly of past times when Jewish and Arab Israelis used to attend each other's weddings or enter business partnerships.   Not any more.
They reminisce about when the police were even-handed in dealing with disputes between Jews and Arabs.
An unemployed labourer says wryly: "Imagine if some Arabs had thrown acid on police, like the settlers in Gaza did.   Oh, they'd be really for it."
The Arab inhabitants also claim to be discriminated against at work.   When for example a business is facing difficulties it is always the Arab employees who are made redundant first, they say.
Marital problems
It is hard to say whether Israel's current efforts to make itself more Jewish has any bearing on this deterioration in relations.
But there are some tell-tale signs that Arab citizens are not valued by the state in the same way as their Jewish counterparts.
Marriage is a major issue for Beit Safafa residents, especially the fact that, if they marry someone from outside Jerusalem, the Israeli authorities are very reluctant to offer their spouses residency.
Being an Arab in Israel means that you have lost your identity.   You don't have any satisfaction at the end of the day, like a normal citizen of a normal country
Arab Israeli schoolteacher
Take one man I met.   His son has been married for five years to a woman from Bethlehem — just a couple of kilometres to the south.   The whole time they have been applying for a Jerusalem residency, but in vain.
"The Israeli government official who we applied to has suggested that one of them lives here and the other in Bethlehem.   That's their solution," he says.
Another of the man's relatives married a Jordanian man.   He cannot even get a visa to visit her in Israel, despite the existence of full diplomatic relations between the two countries.
"Israelis can come and go in Jordan as they please, they buy land and run companies," the man says.
Moreover, Jews and their spouses can come from anywhere in the world and exercise their "right of return" to settle in the world's only Jewish state.
"It is true there are no Arab democracies," the man says.   "But when Israel claims to be the only democracy in the region it should add, 'it is the only democracy for Jews'!"
Financial concerns
The sense of grievance among Arab citizens of Israel arises from economic issues too.
A local schoolteacher claims Arab schools receive about 2% of the education budget, even though the community makes up 20% of pupils.
Arab districts in Jerusalem are visibly more run-down than Jewish ones.   Urban improvement projects pass them by.
Building permits take years to obtain and cost upwards of $30,000.   This disproportionately affects Arab residents, as Israelis tend to live in flats.
Additionally, although all Israeli citizens must perform army service, the law is not enforced on Arab citizens — for "humanitarian reasons" — so they do not have to bear arms against their own kind.
Israeli protesters at Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office
The Gaza withdrawal has widened gaps in some cases
But there are financial benefits from being in the military, such as improved credit ratings and national insurance rebates.
Fear
Arab citizens make up about one-fifth of Israel's population, but they are far from being a contented minority.
"Being an Arab in Israel means that you have lost your identity," says the schoolteacher.
"You don't have any satisfaction at the end of the day, like a normal citizen of a normal country."
An eminent doctor at an Israeli hospital says: "I feel I have to prove myself again every day".
A young visitor from the north of the country describes how her behaviour has changed since two shooting incidents in which eight Israeli Arabs and Palestinians were killed by Israeli settlers trying to disrupt the Gaza pullout.
"I have never been afraid of being an Arab before, but I am now.
"I was on a train the other day talking to this Jewish girl.   She asked where I did my army service, and I had to lie, saying I hadn't done it yet because I've been away, but I'll do it soon.
"I don't want to be recognised as an Arab, because at any time someone could put a gun to my head, and it would be all over for me."

Israeli army kills more Palestinians
By Khalid Amayreh in the West Bank
Sunday 29 May 2005

Depleted uranium has a half life of 4.7 billion years
Israeli occupation soldiers have shot and killed a Palestinian man in the southern West Bank town of Hebron, hours after the killing of another Palestinian near the northern city of Jenin.
Palestinian sources and witnesses said Israeli soldiers patrolling the streets of Hebron's old town on Sunday killed Omar Mahmoud al-Ghafi Hoshiyeh, 200 metres from the Ibrahimi Mosque.
Palestinian witnesses told Aljazeera.net there was a verbal confrontation between the victim and one of the Israeli occupation soldiers, after which the soldier shot him seven times.
However, an Israeli army spokesman said Hoshiyeh tried to stab a soldier.
Relatives of Hoshiyeh at the nearby town of Yatta denied the Israeli account, saying he was a simple labourer without any political affiliations.
"He was planning to get married this summer, I don't believe Israeli claims.   You know, they lie in such circumstances," said Fatimah Hoshiyeh, a relative.
Gaza explosions
Aljazeera's correspondent in Gaza reported on Sunday that two activists of Fatah's al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades were killed and several wounded in a mysterious explosion east of al-Shujaayah district in the Gaza Strip.
The blast was caused by an explosive device.
Another Palestinian activist from Hamas's al-Qassam Brigades was killed when a bomb he was preparing, exploded in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis, the correspondent added.
Settler crimes
At least two other Palestinians, both teenagers, were shot and killed earlier this year at the same spot where Hoshiyeh was killed on Sunday morning.
Some Palestinians accused the Israeli army of deploying settler soldiers in Hebron who murder Palestinians for ideological reasons.
The claim seems to contain at least some truth.
In a television documentary due to be broadcast on Israeli Television, Channel 2 this Tuesday, a soldier in uniform appears on the camera telling the documentary presenter, Haim Yavin, a news anchorman for more than 30 years, that Hebron settlers were constantly urging him to kill Palestinian children.
Another killing in Jenin
Earlier, the Israeli occupation army shot and killed a Palestinian youth at the town of Araba, just south of the city of Jenin.
Palestinian sources said Israeli soldiers opened fire on a civilian vehicle outside the town, killing one man and injuring two others.
“The soldiers beat me and threatened to shoot me.   I told them I had a critically ill person with me who needed to go to hospital.   The soldiers told me, 'let him die!'”
The Israeli army said shots were fired from the car toward a nearby Israeli army camp.
A third Palestinian died on Saturday at an Israeli army roadblock near the village of Amatin in the northern West Bank after Israeli soldiers denied him access to medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
The man, identified as Azzam Attiyeh Suwwan, 56, reportedly succumbed to his critical illness after he was kept waiting for a very long time by occupation forces at the Israeli roadblock.
'Let him die'
"The soldiers beat me and threatened to shoot me.   I told them I had a critically ill person with me who needed to go to hospital.   The soldiers told me: 'Let him die!'," said the taxi driver who carried Suwwan.
The driver said the soldiers allowed an ambulance to reach the roadblock after they made sure the man was dead.
Meanwhile, the Israeli government was due to approve the release of about 400 Palestinian prisoners.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was quoted as saying that the release was meant to strengthen what he called "the moderate Palestinian leadership".
People in Hebron demonstrated for more prisoners to be freed
Pure propaganda
Palestinian cabinet minister Ghassan Khatib had described Sharon's announcement this week as pure propaganda given that Israel had already pledged to release the inmates.
Dozens of Palestinians also protested in the streets of Hebron on Saturday, carrying banners saying "The prisoners are our honour," "Free the prisoners," and "400 freed prisoners is not enough".
Israeli sources said most of the prisoners to be released were imprisoned on political charges and that many of them were "administrative detainees," meaning they were incarcerated indefinitely without charge or trial.
There are as many as 8500 Palestinian political and resistance prisoners in Israeli jails and detention camps, at least 1200 of them are administrative detainees.
Israel views all Palestinians opposed to its occupation as "terrorists".
However, Israeli soldiers and settlers who murder Palestinians are usually given symbolic or light prison sentences not exceeding a few months or weeks by Israeli courts.

Note from Kewe   Kewe.info
We publish the following interview on the site because it has valuable insight into the conflict that continues to take many lives.
From a Palestinian perspective, actions labeled terrorism in the transcript below are considered by many to be an act of war to reclaim their homeland.
To label people as terrorists is easy.   Israel terrorists were part of the foundation of the present land of Israel, and terrorism has continued to be part of the actions of the people of Israel.
As shown in articles above, those of the Islamic faith who are citizens of the State of Israel are not as free as people of the Judaic faith.  Many inequalities exist in fact if not legally stated.   Palestinians are considered non-citizens. Treatment has deteriorated to an acceptance by the people of Israel that Palestinians in the Israeli state are considered non-citizens or as formaly in South Africa, as an inferior class of citizen.   Palestinians who live in the lands under Israeli occupation must obey Jewish dictates, dictates that in any Western country would be considered both barbaric and completely unacceptable.   These people have no rights if the bureaucrats who control their lives decide so.
Many People remain with the perspective that: as the State of South Africa similarly could not divide itself into Bantustans — a South Africa controlled by white people — so Israel and Palestine also cannot separate and exist without massive aid from outside aid.   (Aid chiefly to Israel from U.S. taxpayers.)   The Jewish separation wall and its Bantustans will mean existance, a dreadful existance, not life and happiness for many.   Palestine and Israel is only one country.   This site is dedicated to that perspective.   To have a created state based upon race or religion is an aberration, a lusus naturae.
United States policy towards Israel is the reason for both sides not resolving this situation peacefully.   Rather than look to Israel for the continuation of the conflict we should look to the people of the United States and their tax-paying funds — funds propagating a situation of harm and death that has now spanned more than fifty years.
For Yonatan Shapira — who might not agree with the goal of Israel and Palestine as one country — and for the many others who oppose Israeli occupation policies in some form, we offer this transcript.

Mind Over Matters:  Refusing to Serve in the Occupied Territories       April, 2005
Interview by Mike McCormick
Yonatan Shapira, former Captain in the Israeli Air Force, Refusenik and Human Rights Activist
Mike McCormick:   If could start out, tell us how you ended up being in the Israeli Air force.
Yonatan Shapira:   Maybe it is important to say in Israel every boy wants to be a pilot.
It was my dream.
The dream of my childhood.
I was born in an air force base where my father was a fighter pilot.
He was a commander of an air force squadron back in the seventies.
Palestinian students peer into the doorway as they look at a large pool of blood on the floor at the United Nations school in Gaza.

The shooting took place Tuesday, June 1, 2004.

Two students, ten years old, were critically wounded by Israeli forces while attending class a shortime earlier.

Palestine Monitor      Wednesday, June 2, 2004:

Israeli army shoots two more schoolchildren in Rafah

Two 10 year-old schoolchildren were shot in the al-Omaria school run by UNRWA in Rafah, when an Israeli tank fired into their classroom.

Bullets fired from the tank flew through the classroom window, hitting Mahmoud Hamad in the neck and Hisham al Habil in the head.    Hisham is now in a stable condition but Mahmoud remains in a serious condition.

The boys had not even been sitting by the windows but in the middle of the room.

The school director, Atia Abed al Wahed said there had been no shooting from Palestinians before the tank fired and that the school was well-known to the Israeli troops anyway, and even flies an UNRWA flag.

Despite this, the school has been fired on many times, placing the 1,300 students and their teachers in constant danger.

Atia said that all they could do was rely on UNRWA to negotiate with the Israeli troops, but that this seemed to have little effect.

The Israel military, including weapons: tanks, missiles, warplanes, artillery, shells, are all funded by the US taxpayer.

More than Fifteen million US dollars is given by US taxpayers to Israel each day for their military use.

Total funding is more than 4 billion US dollars per year.

Like most of the children in my school I wanted to become a pilot.
It was a very good combination for me between both serving my country and defending my country and also at the same time get those skills and abilities to build my career and to have a difficult and hard profession.
So I went to the pilot course.
In 1993 I became a rescue and assault pilot.
For me it was a dream come true.
I always wanted to fly in the sky and here I am.
But then of course other things happened which brought me to this point where I am sitting with you in an interview about my decision to refuse, and organize this pilot letter.
Mike McCormick:   When was it that you started having second thoughts about your career.
Yonatan Shapira:   First about my career.
I served seven years as an air force pilot, flying the Bell 212, which is a rescue and assault helicopter.
Then I became a reservist.
The majority of the Israeli air force is built by reservist pilots who are serving like it's a part time job every week — one or two days that you are serving in the air force, the rest you working in other things.
You can be a student.
You can be many things.
I became a reservist and then I went back to the army.
My squadron commander called me to join in again and to be part of the foundation team of the new Black Hawk squadron.
I was sent to Fort Trucker Alabama to have some training, and then I went back to Israel and became one of the operation leaders and the instructors of this new squadron.
And then again I became a reservist.
The decision and the change in my mind when with this process.
All the time, like two streams flowing, one next to each other.
I can say that many years I was very much a leftist in the matter of political views.
I was against the occupation.
Against the fact that we have Jewish settlements in the territories.
Against the war in Lebanon.
But it wasn't something unique because most of my friends in the squadron, my fellow pilots were against it.
Most of my friends and my family and everyone that I knew was some kind of in the peace camp, the so called peace camp in Israel.
I kept this 'B' personality and maybe something that can so it very nice is when I was coming back from the squadron I used to take off my flying suit and take a sign and go to demonstrate in the center of Tel Aviv where we have a lot of demonstration all the time.
I kept this 'B' personality for so many years.
For example, I remember that I learnt the nice values about my country, values like freedom, justice, equality.
I did not realize in those days that at the same time I studied those nice values and learned how beautiful is democracy that I live in, at the same time my country, my army controlled so many people without equality, justice and freedom.
It is a long process of becoming aware to the reality you live in.
I start to make a big change in myself was the last four years of what we call the second intifada.
We had some kind of circle of mutual violence and revenge.
At a certain point you understand there is a circle of violence and revenge and you are just part of this circle.
Although I didn't fly machines who kill.
I flew rescue helicopters and I land commando forces but of course those commando forces did not come to clean the gardens, and I must take responsibility for what the soldiers I brought did.
And not just what they did, but also what my fellow pilots in other squadrons, and my friends from pilot course, and other commanders in the army are doing.
Once you are part of a system you feel some kind of responsibility of what the system is doing.
What your family — because the Israeli air force is like a family, for me it was like a family — not just that I was growing up in a family that was living in air force bases but later all my friends were pilots, many of them were commanders.
I think I start to have this feeling that something is going wrong in my family.
One of the things that really changed it was the assassination policy that was used by my government.
You all probably know about the terrible attacks that we have in Israel.
I have a personal experience because I am volunteering for many years with the Terror Victims organization.
But give support and aid to new immigrants to Israel from terror attacks.
I know those victims from rescuing.
A lot of people, children, from areas in Israel that were attacked.
But at the same time by government started to use targeted assassination policy they call it.
You know all of us were very much supportive for missions that their target is to stop suicide bomber.
Of course it is very clear that we should stop the suicide bomber when he is going to commit a crime and to kill innocents.
If I would have been asked to crash myself with my helicopter, and my team, in order to stop a terrorist that is going to kill innocents, of course I would have done it with a whole heart.
But this policy, as for example one of the commanders of the army said once years ago, that every member of one of the groups Hamas, is a target.
Of course this organization, it is a terrible organization, and they commit crimes and they have terrorists, but there are so many other people like spokesperson, like kindergarten teacher, and they did not do something that they deserve to die.
For decide who will die who will live.
Not a court who make these decisions.
A few commanders with the Minister of Defense of something like that.
Missiles out of the sky paid by US taxpayer, supplied by U.S. government
Mind Over Matters:       April, 2005
Interview by Mike McCormick given by Yonatan Shapira, former Captain in the Israeli Air Force, Refusenik and Human Rights Activist
Refusing to Serve in the Occupied Territories
Yonatan Shapira: It is totally against the values of my country and my army.
This policy became my routine.
Every week, every day, sometimes twice a day, helicopters and fighters took off from air force bases to send missiles and bombs to target suspects in civilian areas.
In the beginning they were targeting the car of the suspect when it was outside of the town, and then it become closer to the town.
Then when he is inside a city.
Again I think those people who are organizing terror attacks are doing crime and we must stop them.
And we have the right to stop them.
But there is a huge difference between doing that, to use machines that are used for attacking tanks and forces and combat fighters, to target one or two person that are staying somewhere in some city full of crowds.
Gaza is one of the most crowded area in the world.
Of course once you do it you create damage.
You kill innocents
You kill innocents.
It was totally against the values that we were raised upon.
One of the things that really…was the turning point I think…was the last stroke that broke the camel back…for me was three weeks in the July 2002.
The first thing that happened I was on standby.
I had a mission to go to rescue Israelis who were attacked by terrorists.
Someone who got inside the house and killed almost all the family and burned, and I was the first crew who landed in the area and we took all the injured to hospital and most of them were children and a lot of blood and terrible things, and eight minutes of flight I am landing in the center of Israel in one of the hospitals.
It is so close this battlefield where the shooting and everything and the screaming and everything and then you are landing in a quiet hospital and during the final…when I landed...I look beneath the helicopter and I see a wedding in a park.
People are having the wedding and food on the tables and dancing and I thought how amazing this short distance and these people so far from understanding what is going on in my helicopter.
This unawareness was amazing
This unawareness was amazing.
Missiles out of the sky paid by US taxpayer
Weapons by U.S. government
It took me awhile to understand that also in the cockpit, in myself there is a certain amount of unawareness of the whole situation.
Then weeks later, in the night of 22nd of July, an F16 fighter took off from the air force base with a pilot and navigator that went to defend their country, our country.
There were sure they were doing something in order to protect the people, the Israeli people…in the middle of the night they send one ton, which is more than two thousand pounds bomb, that equaled to something like hundred suicide belt bomb.
And they send this bomb on the house of the leader of the Hamas in Gaza strip, no doubt a terrorist, no doubt a criminal, that we should have stopped and bring to jail and even maybe to execute him.
But the air force shot him with one bomb in the middle of the most crowded area in Gaza strip.
Of course he died and with him fourteen innocents, including nine children.
Just like the children that I brought a few weeks before from this terror attack.
For those children it didn't matter that a suicide bomber, or Palestinian militant or terrorist or whatever killed them, or a nice pilot with blue eyes.
It doesn't matter for them
It doesn't matter for them.
What shook me more was the reaction of the air force commander.
Because Israel was like uproar about it and many people shout and scream that its crazy and we became crazy and this is not something to protect.
It is revenge.
The air force commander, my air force commander, that taught me those basic values about the army, said in public, in an interview, that this mission was perfectly executed.
He addressed the pilots of the air force saying they should sleep well at night because everything is deep in his moral standards.
And you know there is nothing that helps you more to wake up then someone who is telling you to sleep well.
Many of us woke up since then.
I think those few weeks was the turning point inside myself, and I found many other people that agreed with me.
At the beginning you feel like crazy.
That you have this personal mental crisis.
That you have to reevaluate everything, question everything — to check were you wrong.
You believe this commanders.
You believe this system
You believe this system.

Here you see it's like mutual violence.
It's a revenge policy more than a defend policy.
I was recruited.
I was going to the air force course in order to become a pilot in the Israel defense forces not the Israeli revenge forces.
Then we started to organize this letter and this petition.
We had many pilots who joined us.
Many commanders who supported us quietly.
Even ex commanders of the air force knew about it.
At the end just twenty-seven pilots signed the letter.
Later some other joined us but about a hundred other pilots knew about it and kept it secretly and that was something that was threatening the authorities because they understood that we have a big support.
A very large support in the Israeli army, Israeli air force, and in the Israeli society.
Almost all of the cultural elite in Israel support us in some way.
Many people in the media support us.
Though they do it quietly.
They don't do it in open.
More and more Israelis realize that the reason of this circle of revenge — of course we have many reasons — but one of the major reasons is this terrible ongoing occupation, which corrupts all of our society.
Those circumstances that are a result of this occupation, of this decision to control other people, bring us to so many bad things.
Death and injury caused by US taxpayer

That people are doing against us.
That we are doing against people.
In order to change this situation we have first to stop the occupation.
We have first to put an end to this terrible mistake of putting isolated Jewish settlements in area where so many Palestinians live in.
And grabbing lands, and confiscating land for so many people
And grabbing lands, and confiscating land for so many people.
Building walls in the middle of villages.
So beside the question how to fight the terrorists.
And not become terrorists.
We said that there is a necessity of immediate withdrawal from the territories.
What was amazing for me to hear a few months ago was that dos vice glass, which is the chief secretary of Prime Minister Sharon and one of his advisors, said publicly in the newspaper article that one of the reasons that they decide to go for this disengagement plan and withdraw from Gaza was the pilots letter.
He said that the public opinion after the pilot letter and the Geneva agreement — the inside and the outside pressure — brought them to understand that we must create some change and begin to have some kind of hope.
So it is much more than we expected to happen.
A group of pilots that are writing a letter.
It is really encouraging us.

We are not the only refusers in Israel.
We are just another part of this chain of refusers movement.
We have refusers that refused to serve in 1982 in Lebanon.
We have refusers that refuse to serve in the occupied territories about two years before we publish our letter.
We have conscientious objectors that even refuse to enlist in the army because they don't want to be part of the system that makes the occupation possible.
We have women refusers now.
So this whole movement we believe is essential for creating the necessary inside and outside pressure on our government that will start to first obey the international law, and second give us Israelis a kind of hope.
With a policy that will bring us want to live in Israel and to raise our families in Israel and not to run away from this place.
This is the whole idea that brought me here.
Accept this invitation of the refusers solidarity network.
And...Shalom, two Jewish organizations that bring refusers to the States in order to meet and talk with Americans and especially the Jewish community.
Because we all know that Israel is the fifty-first star on your flag.
If we really want to create a change we have also to push from here and to create this pressure, this essential pressure on the government that it will not be just the Gaza first, Gaza last.
The disengagement plan will not engage just the withdrawal from Gaza but withdrawing from all the territories.

Interview by Mike McCormick given by Yonatan Shapira, former Captain in the Israeli Air Force, Refusenik and Human Rights Activist
Refusing to Serve in the Occupied Territories
Mike McCormick:   What was the reaction from different groups when you came forward with the letter?
For instance from the people that you worked with.
From family members and from your society.
Yonatan Shapira:   I think that no one could stay indifferent.
Many called us traitors.
Many others called us heroes.
We got a lot of love and a lot of hate.
You have to learn how to cope with this because once you take this kind of decision you are considered to be a hero for so many people, Israeli people who believe in your cause.
But you are also frightening the way of thinking of so many other people that do not agree with you.
In my family I got a lot of support.
My brothers are also refusers.
My old brother served in a commando elite unit.
He was one who create the letter of those command unit soldiers who refused to serve in the territories.
My young brother is a member of Courage to Refuse, which is combatants and officers that refuse to serve in the territories.
There are more than six or seven hundred of them in this organization.
The total number of declared refusers is about fourteen hundred.
We have much more — we call them gray refusers.
Because gray — its not black and it not white — and its not declaring their refusal but its not participating in mission, or they don't go to the territories.
They find many excuses not to do it.
Because they don't want to suffer the consequences, so we have a lot of them and of course all of them support us.
I have so many friends in the air force that still training in the air force and instructing.
They keep calling me and encouraging us and saying they lack the courage.
They don't want to stop flying.
People are addicted to fly.
I am addicted it flying.
It's something incredible to be able to take off with a powerful machine that has no limits sometimes.
It is something like taking drugs.
So many pilots and many people lack the courage to declare their refusal but on the ground they refuse to participate.
For example we have many pilots that have special deals with their commanders that they are not going to attack the territories.
They will not make a fuss and the commander will not make a fuss.
It's both interest to keep it quiet.
Of course they think it is hypocrisy because once you allow other people to do these missions and not stop them, you have responsibility, but it is better than doing nothing.
My father I still have some disagreement.
He was a squadron commander back in the seventies.
Those people are built in different materials.
It is very hard for them to accept these kind of things.
I believe he is getting more and more close to our views.
You know he has three refusers in his family, and his wife my mother volunteers for organization named Checkpoint Watch, which is women organization who send women volunteers to checkpoints in the territories.
They stand there and observe what happens.
Sometimes they can give an aid to a Palestinian, and sometime they film.
If a soldier is doing wrong they can film it and publish it.
They can try to give some help in this impossible, cruel things at checkpoints.
But of course I said that there are many people who do not agree with me.
This is part of the reason we dedicate ourselves…the first time we have to go and explain.
It is wonderful for me to talk with people who do not agree with me and think that I am bad for Israel or whatever, then to talk with people who are already convinced.
Mike McCormick:   I think this is a correct copy of the letter.
Would you please read that.
Yonatan Shapira:   Maybe I should read a few paragraph because it is quite long.
I remind our listeners that we wrote it and edited it to the center of Israel, to the Israeli authority, to the leadership and to the commanders, so when I look at it now it looks quite arrogant.
The way we wrote it.
Because we wanted to give the impression, the right impression, that we are from the hard core of patriot Israelis.
And we really are.
So we use this we word all the time.
I read part of it…
We air force pilots who are raised upon the values of Zionism, sacrifice and contributing to the State of Israel, object to perform illegal and immoral orders.
We refuse to take part in the attacks of the air force in concentrations of civilian population, and we refuse to harm innocent civilians.
These actions are illegal and immoral and are a direct result of the ongoing occupation which corrupts Israeli society as a whole.
The continuation of the occupation delivers a mortal blow to the security of the state of Israel, to her moral strength.
The last paragraph, which is very important we wrote that…
We who serve as active pilots, as fighters, leaders and instructors of the next generation of pilots declare here that we will continue to serve in the IDF and in the Israel air force in any mission for the protection of Israel.
We wanted to say that we are willing to serve and risk our life in the Israeli defense forces but not more, not longer in the Israeli occupation forces.
Because we believe that serving in the occupation forces is harming the security of the Israel state.
This letter create quite a big reaction.
We are not the only refusers in Israel.
We are just another part of this chain of refusers movement.
We have refusers that refused to serve in 1982 in Lebanon.
We have refusers that refuse to serve in the occupied territories about two years before we publish our letter.

Interview by Mike McCormick given by Yonatan Shapira, former Captain in the Israeli Air Force, Refusenik and Human Rights Activist
Refusing to Serve in the Occupied Territories
Mike McCormick:   Would it be fair to say that you felt that the missions you are being sent on were contrary to the core values that you had signed on with for the IDF?
Yonatan Shapira:   First of all I must mention again and again, myself I was flying rescue and assault helicopter, which means I did not shoot anyone.
I was flying the Black Hawk and in Israeli air force they are not armed with missiles and bombs.
So most of the missions I did were rescuing people, soldiers, civilians, and landing command forces.
But of course I said land commando forces that will go and shoot someone.
And you have to take responsibility.
But I will concentrate in your question, and tell you a short story that will answer this question.
When we published the letter, the air force commander and leaders and authorities, it drove them crazy.
The air force commander was making the rounds in all the air force bases, speaking with all the air crew, the pilots and navigators, telling them that they know there is a powerful, big and powerful organization behind us.
We are just the puppet.
They said that they are going to find who is this big and powerful organization and expose it to everyone.
I have an opportunity to give a speech to say some words about what we did.
It was in Tel Aviv university.
I started with saying in this festive occasion I am going to expose to all of you the big and powerful organization that stand behind us.
Then I read two of its basic principals.
Two of the basic principals of the Israeli Defense Forces.
The purity of arm and the human dignity.
So I think it answers that question that we think the basic principals of the idea are exactly the principals that we are acting upon.
Maybe it is important at this time to explain something that is very unique in the Israeli air force and the army.
We have a command that says that a soldier and an officer and a pilot should not follow an illegal and immoral command.
Collecting tomatoes
Greenhouses (in background) destroyed by Israel
All paid for by US taxpayer
This command is superior above all the other commands.
A soldier has actually the obligation to refuse illegal and immoral command.
So when I was interviewed by the commander of the air force when he discharged me, dismissed me, I told him that I want you to charge me. Let's bring it court because you taught me, you commander taught me not to follow illegal and immoral command.
I say that this is illegal and immoral command. If you think different let's bring it to court. Then you can charge me and put me in jail even.
Of course they couldn't because even the court in Israel cannot come with this decision that this kind of actions of sending missiles and bombs and targeting suspects in the middle of a crowded area are legal.
So in some way, not just the principals of the army are on our side, but also the Israeli law is on our side.
Mike McCormick:   What do you think citizens need to do to create an infrastructure or an atmosphere that supports military people like yourself so that you can honor those values that when military commanders force you into situations that you know violate those values that you have the strength to be able to step forward and say no, I am not going to participate in this?
Yonatan Shapira:   I think the most important thing for people who believe and hold the same values as us, is speak out.
There is a problem that many people agree with us.
Many people think it is wrong to occupy another nation.
Many people, for example in America, know that it is wrong to spread democracy by killing thousands of people.
So first of all I think one should speak out.
Even if it is not the common opinion.
If we are now talking about the Jewish community, Jewish people always considered to be very liberal and pluralistic, with a lot of opinions.
We used to have a joke about ourselves that whenever you have two Jewish people in one room you have three opinions.
It seems to me now that you can have a hundred people in one room with just one allowable opinion.
Screams in despair as Israel bulldozers come to steal her families land
Paid for by US taxpayer
The real support that we have from within the Jewish community here is amazing.
I now meet those people when I come to lectures, to meetings, with so many incredible people that support us.
And many of them lack the courage to speak out in their synagogues, in their communities.
In some way we try to give them the courage to speak out.
The Jewish community in the States is built from so many liberal, amazing people who are very much thoughtful and intelligent — and understand how bad is this situation of occupation, and how much it is harming the security of Israel.
They should speak out.
They should feel courage enough to speak out and to say what they have to say in order to pressure, this right pressure on my government from outside.
Another thing that is important to say is that not just a soldier can be a refuser.
You can be a radio interviewer to be a refuser.
You can refuse to your bosses not to say…
You can refuse to accept the agenda of your government and to follow this crowd in this mainstream who are blindly believing so many lies that they are being told now.
And I am talking about the States now.
Everyone can be a refuser.
Our history, when I say our, everyone's, not just Jewish history, always recognized those refusers who changed the situation.
People like Martin Luther King was a refuser.
So many brave people that you now have temples for them.
You see them on those cash things.
These are refusers.
So many heroes from theatre, literature, movies are refuser.
People who refuse to accept the common opinion of others.
People who refuse to accept that black are inferiors and white are superiors.
Back then they were considered to be traitors or bad guys and now they are our heroes.
Everyone in the society can be and should be at some time a refuser.
Mike McCormick:   When you were first composing and then bringing forward the pilots letter, were you fearful of the repercussion of that?
Yonatan Shapira:   We didn't think that it would be so strong the reaction.
At the same time no one put us in jail.
No one took our freedom.
It is important to say that Israel, for Israel, for Jewish people, and I know it sound very problematic, for Jewish people it is a much more free country than the states.
For example if I was a refuser pilot in the United States, probably I now was in Guantanamo and the key was in the sea.
They will lock me in the prison and drop the keys.
Bus Israel has much of a history of freedom of speech.
This is exactly what we are using.
We take advantage of this freedom.
Especially because so many other people in Israel do not have those rights.
If you are a Jewish or Arab that lives within the 1967 border you have all the rights.
You can vote for the Parliament.
You have rights in court and in all the fields.
But once you are a Palestinian that lives in the territories you have no rights.
So we didn't think that they would assassinate us.
Because as I said Israel is a very strong democracy when you are living within the 1967 borders.
For example if I was in Syria I could speak here but my head would be somewhere else.
The only consequences were some problem in jobs.
Some problem in friends, and some loneliness sometimes.
But not more than that.

Interview by Mike McCormick given by Yonatan Shapira, former Captain in the Israeli Air Force, Refusenik and Human Rights Activist
Refusing to Serve in the Occupied Territories
Mike McCormick:   What would you like U.S. citizens and listeners to do?
Yonatan Shapira:   I think first I want them to understand that I here in a place of love for my country.
From a deep connection to the Jewish tradition.
To the community.
To the family.
To the Israeli people.
And to the land of Israel.
And to believe me when I am saying that I do all of this from love and care and my will and desire to claim the future — that I will have a chance to live in peace in Israel, in my country.
If they believe me, they must now be those refusers that I talked before.
Not to accept the propaganda that they hear all the time from many sources.
And understand that they have a major role in this situation.
And they can create the right pressure; they can create the pressure that will come toward the American leadership, which will in turn put the pressure on the Israeli leadership.
There are many ways to do it.
You can right a letter to your representative in Congress.
You can go to a demonstration.
You can join in Jewish organization that are working hard against the occupation.
You can help bring refusers like us to talk with Jewish community.
You can be much more involved in this situation if you want to help.
There are very nice and positive Palestinians in Israel organization.
People can be much more active and involved about it.
It's important for me to say that once you are doing those things from a place of love and care to the people — to the Israelis and Arabs who live there — those actions that you take are much more powerful than if you do if from a place of hate and revenge.
Anger you will have much more chance to loose.
Mike McCormick: How can people find out more about your work?
Yonatan Shapira: First time here I was invited to the States by two organizations.
Two Jewish organizations: one is Brit Tzedek v'Shalom. It is the Jewish alliance for peace and justice.
Through their website you can find a lot of information about their activities.
The Refusers Solidarity Network, which is the other organization which also has a website.
It's very easy to join in, to help to try to be involved in those activities

I will say last word: Many Israeli complain against me, say against me, that I am doing, we are doing dirty laundry outside home.
I am saying that if your feel and believe that the laundry is dirty, you should clean it and not wear it.
That's my message.

Marla Ruzicka, Rachel Corrie and "Credibility"

W hatever sour emotions I entertained while reading accounts of the funeral of Marla Ruzicka had nothing really to do with the death on April 16 of a brave young woman in Baghdad.
On many accounts and I have had a detailed conversation with a close friend of Marla's whose judgment I respect she was an idealistic person whose prime political flaw seems to have been the very forgivable one of naivety.
Both in Afghanistan and Iraq, in furtherance of her humanitarian schemes, Marla Ruzicka elected a stance of studious neutrality in ascribing responsibility for the victims of US bombings and ground fire.
This pursuit of "credibility" certainly yielded its ironic reward in the political range of those who publicly mourned her.
A US senator Barbara Boxer attended Ruzicka's funeral in Lakeport, northern California. Bob Herbert of the New York Times poured out an emotional column honoring Ruzicka.
So did Robert L. Pollock, a writer for the Wall Street Journal editorial page.
"America has lost a peerless and unique ambassador," Pollock wrote on April 19.
"[S]he stood out from the crowd of journalists and self-proclaimed humanitarians — far too many of whom believed their mission was to bear witness to an American misadventure in Iraq that would, and should, fail."
The sourness in my soul stemmed from a contrast.
Almost exactly two years earlier, on March 16, 2003, another brave young woman in a foreign land lost her life, not to a suicide bomber, but under the blade of a 47-ton bulldozer made in America by the Caterpillar company specifically for house demolitions and driven by an Israeli soldier.
Maybe, in the last seconds of his life, that suicide bomber in Baghdad never even saw Ruzicka.
The soldier in Gaza surely saw Corrie, clearly visible in her fluorescent orange jacket, and rolled the bulldozer blade right over her.

No US senator attended Rachel's funeral after her parents brought her home to the state of Washington. Both US senators ran in the opposite direction.
Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell both Democrats did nothing
Later the Corries disclosed that after their return to the US with their daughter's body, they contacted their US Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, both Democrats, and told them how their daughter had been deliberately murdered while peacefully demonstrating against house demolitions, which are violations of international law.
Murray and Cantwell, the Corries recall, were quick with expressions of outrage and promises of investigations.
The Corries never heard from Murray or Cantwell again.
Cindy Corrie's mailbox filled with disgusting letters abusing her for being a bad mother, and the Israel-right-or-wrong crowd began an unrelenting campaign of abuse of Rachel, to the overall effect that she had it coming to her, that "She was defending terrorists who smuggle weapons across the border to kill Israelis", that the International Solidarity Movement of which she was a member, was a terrorist symp group.
As Professor Steve Niva of Evergreen State College in Olympia wrote on this site shortly after Corrie's death, "There is no evidence that Dr. Samir Nasrallah, whose house Rachel was defending, or anyone in this neighborhood were concealing any tunnels or were engaged in any attacks on Israelis.
The Israeli army doesn't even make this insupportable claim.
His house was being demolished because, like dozens of others that have been bulldozed in Hay Salaam, his home was near the 'Apartheid Wall' Israel was building.
Moreover, the ISM has a policy of only protecting homes that are not suspected to be involved in tunnel activities."

Niva duly received a torrent of e-mailed abuse.
And how did the Israel-right-or-wrong crowd on the Evergreen campus react?
Did Corrie's murder prompt them to any serious reflection on Applied Zionism in Gaza?
No. Niva tells me that after some initial heartfelt expressions of sadness for Corrie, the small Zionist groups began complaining that they felt uncomfortable as Jews to be on campus, and a few started raising concerns about alleged anti-Israel and possibly anti-Semitic sentiments getting a free pass at Evergreen.
They started to peddle charges about the Middle East Studies faculty — and rumors began to circulate at the local synagogue that there was a "crisis" regarding Jews at Evergreen.
Slurs against Niva continue to this day, as they do against Corrie.
Mother Jones ran a 7,000 word attack on Corrie and ISM, later convincingly demonstrated by Olympia's Phan Nguyen to have been plagiarized from extreme right sites and sources.
Nor was there measured lamentation from the Wall Street Journal's editorial page which surpassed itself in foam-flecked savagery in a piece by Ruhama Shattan, which managed to blame Corrie for the bombing death of the State Department officials that occurred in Gaza in October, 2004!
Shattan's piece had already run in the Jerusalem Post and actually prompted the press attache in the US embassy in Tel Aviv, Paul Patin, to write a letter to the Post denouncing it as "hateful incitement" and "disgusting abuse of the anniversary of the death of this American citizen".
Maybe this letter is what prompted the WSJ's editorial page editor, Paul Gigot to see Shattan's diatribe as suitable material for his pages.
Marla Ruzicka decided to work within the system, as they say.
Maybe, given the aims of her organization, CIVIC, that was an appropriate choice.
I'm not inclined to pass judgment on that.
The "system" duly mourned and honored her.
Rachel Corrie saw that the "system", with all its innumerable and fraudulent roadmaps, negotiated solutions, Oslo frameworks, processes of peace and so forth had no stopped, nay, was encouraging the daily outrages of demolitions of Palestinian homes and kindred barbarities. Corrie stood in the path of that system and died, and her murder was covered up by Israel and by the government of her own country.

Across the thirty years that I have written about the vast injustice done to Palestinians by successive Israeli governments, condoned and paid for by the US, I have read a thousand admonitions to support what peace plan was in train, to espouse solutions with "credibility".
Peace plans and roadmaps stand definitively revealed as the frauds they always were
And here we are now, when all the peace plans and roadmaps stand definitively revealed as the frauds they always were.
Any imagined evacuation of Israeli settlements from Gaza is pure distraction.
The story lies in the new settlements stretching out from East Jerusalem, amputating any conceivably viable Palestinian state.
In this enterprise, there's no "case for Israel" beyond violent, illegal occupation and eviction.
Two years after her murder I honor Rachel Corrie and enquire of those supposedly reasonable voices on the Zionist side of the aisle here in the United States, What have you got to say for yourselves now?

2,606 people lost their lives in the World Trade Center buildings on September 11, 2001.

125 people lost their lives at the Pentagon on 9/11.

246 people lost their lives on the four planes on 9/11.

Danish scientist Niels Harrit on nano-thermite in the WTC dust.

Niels Harrit, you and eight other researchers conclude in this article that it was nano-thermite that caused these buildings to collapse.

We have discovered distinctive red/gray chips in all the samples we have studied of the dust produced by the destruction of the World Trade Center.

One sample was collected by a Manhattan resident about ten minutes after the collapse of the second WTC Tower, two the next day, and a fourth about a week later.

The properties of these chips were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

The red portion of these chips is found to be an unreacted thermitic material and highly energetic.

The carbon content of the red material indicates that an organic substance is present.

This would be expected for super-thermite formulations in order to produce high gas pressures upon ignition and thus make them explosive.

So you found nano-thermite in the World Trade Center buildings, why do you think it caused the collapses?

A new scientific article concludes that impacts from the two hijacked aircraft did not cause the collapses in 2001.
We turn our attention to 9/11 — the major attack in New York.
Apparently the two airplane-impacts did not cause the towers to collapse, according to a newly published scientific article.
Researchers found nano-thermite explosive in the rubble, that cannot have come from the planes.
They believe several tonnes of explosives were placed in the buildings in advance.
Niels Harrit, you and eight other researchers conclude in this article, that it was nano-thermite that caused these buildings to collapse. What is nano-thermite?
Niels Harrit   We found nano-thermite in the rubble.
We are not saying only nano-thermite was used.
Thermite itself dates back to 1893.
It is a mixture of aluminum and rust-powder, which react to create intense heat.
The reaction produces iron, heated to 2500 °C.
This can be used to do welding.   It can also be used to melt other iron.
Nanotechnology makes things smaller.   So in nano-thermite, this powder from 1893 is reduced to tiny particles, perfectly mixed.
When these react, the intense heat develops much more quickly.
Nano-thermite can be mixed with additives to give off intense heat, or serve as a very effective explosive.
It contains more energy than dynamite, and can be used as rocket fuel.
Danish TV2   I Googled nano-thermite, and not much has been written about it.   Is it a widely known scientific substance?   Or is it so new that other scientists are hardly aware of it?
Niels Harrit   It is a collective name for substances with high levels of energy.
If civilian researchers (like myself) are not familiar with it, it is probably because they do not do much work with explosives.
As for military scientists, you would have to ask them.
I do not know how familiar they are with nanotechnology.
Danish TV2   So you found this substance in the WTC, why do you think it caused the collapses?
Niels Harrit   Well, it's an explosive.   Why else would it be there?
Danish TV2   You believe the intense heat melted the building?s steel support structure, and caused the building to collapse like a house of cards?
Niels Harrit   I cannot say precisely, as this substance can serve both purposes.
It can explode and break things apart, and it can melt things.
Both effects were probably used, as I see it.
Molten metal pours out of the South Tower several minutes before the collapse.
This indicates the whole structure was being weakened in advance.
Then the regular explosives come into play.
The actual collapse sequence had to be perfectly timed, all the way down.
Danish TV2   What quantities are we talking about?
Niels Harrit   A lot.   There were only two planes, but three skyscrapers collapsed.
We know roughly how much dust was created.
The pictures show huge quantities, everything but the steel was pulverised.
And we know roughly how much unreacted thermite we have found.

This is the “loaded gun”, material that did not ignite for some reason.
We are talking about tonnes.   Over 10 tonnes, possibly 100 tonnes.
Danish TV2   Ten tonnes, possibly 100 tonnes, in three buildings?   And these substances are not normally found in such buildings?
Niels Harrit   No.   These materials are extremely advanced.
Danish TV2   How do you place such material in a skyscraper, on all the floors?
Niels Harrit   How you would get it in?
Danish TV2   Yes.
Niels Harrit   If I had to transport it in those quantities I would use pallets.   Get a truck and move it in on pallets.
Danish TV2   Why hasn't this been discovered earlier?
Niels Harrit   By whom?
Danish TV2   The caretakers, for example.     If you are moving 10 to 100 tonnes of nano-thermite around, and placing it on all the floors.     I am just surprised no-one noticed.
Niels Harrit   As a journalist, you should address that question to the company responsible for security at the WTC.
Danish TV2   So you are in no doubt the material was present?
Niels Harrit   You cannot fudge this kind of science.
We have found it.   Unreacted thermite.
Danish TV2   What responses has your article received around the world?
Niels Harrit   It is completely new knowledge for me.
It was only published last Friday.   So it is too early to say.
But the article may not be as groundbreaking as you think.
Hundreds of thousands of people around the world, have long known that the three buildings were demolished.

This has been crystal clear.
Our research is just the last nail in the coffin.
This is not the 'smoking gun', it is the 'loaded gun'.
Each day, thousands of people realise that the WTC was demolished.
That is something unstoppable.
Danish TV2   Why has no-one discovered earlier that there was nano-thermite in the buildings?   Almost ten years have passed.
Niels Harrit   You mean in the dust?
Danish TV2   Yes.
Niels Harrit   It was by chance that someone looked at the dust with a microscope.
They are tiny red chips.
The biggest are 1 mm in size, and can be seen with the naked eye.
But you need a microscope to see the vast majority.
It was by chance that someone discovered them two years ago.
Danish TV2   It has taken 18 months to prepare the scientific article you refer to.
Niels Harrit   It is a very comprehensive article based on thorough research.
Danish TV2   You have been working on this for several years, because it didn't make sense to you.
Niels Harrit   Yes, over two years actually.
It all started when I saw the collapse of Building 7, the third skyscraper.
It collapsed seven hours after the twin towers.
And there were only two airplanes.
When you see a 47-storey building, 186m tall, collapse in 6.5 seconds, and you are a scientist, you think “what?”.
I had to watch it again… and again.
I hit the button 10 times, and my jaw dropped lower and lower.
Firstly, I had never heard of that building before.
And there was no visible reason why it should collapse in that way, straight down, in 6.5 seconds.
I have had no rest since that day.
Danish TV2   Ever since 9/11 there has been speculation, and conspiracy theories.   What do you say to viewers who hear about your research and say, “we?ve heard it all before, there are lots of conspiracy theories”.   What would you say to convince them that this is different?
Niels Harrit   I think there is only one conspiracy theory worth mentioning, the one involving 19 hijackers.
I think viewers should ask themselves what evidence they have seen to support the official conspiracy theory.
If anyone has seen evidence, I would like to hear about it
No-one has been formally charged.   No-one is 'wanted'.
Our work should lead to demands for a proper criminal investigation of the 9/11 terrorist attack.
Because it never happened.   We are still waiting for it.
We hope our results will be used as technical evidence when that day comes.
Danish TV2   Niels Harrit, fascinating, thanks for coming in.
Niels Harrit   My pleasure
ITALIAN SAYS 9-11 SOLVED
It’s common knowledge, he reveals
CIA — Mossad behind terror attacks
By the Staff of American Free Press
Former Italian President Francesco Cossiga, who revealed the existence of Operation Gladio, has told Italy’s oldest and most widely read newspaper that the 9-11 terrorist attacks were run by the CIA and Mossad, and that this was common knowledge among global intelligence agencies.
In what translates awkwardly into English, Cossiga told the newspaper Corriere della Sera:
“All the [intelligence services] of America and Europe… know well that the disastrous attack has been planned and realized from the Mossad, with the aid of the Zionist world in order to put under accusation the Arabic countries and in order to induce the western powers to take part … in Iraq [and] Afghanistan.”
Cossiga was elected president of the Italian Senate in July 1983 before winning a landslide election to become president of the country in 1985, and he remained until 1992.
Cossiga’s tendency to be outspoken upset the Italian political establishment, and he was forced to resign after revealing the existence of, and his part in setting up, Operation Gladio.
This was a rogue intelligence network under NATO auspices that carried out bombings across Europe in the 1960s, 1970s and ’80s.
Gladio’s specialty was to carry out what they termed 'false flag' operations — terror attacks that were blamed on their domestic and geopolitical opposition.
In March 2001, Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra stated, in sworn testimony:
“You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game.
The reason was quite simple: to force … the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security.”
Cossiga first expressed his doubts about 9-11 in 2001, and is quoted by 9-11 researcher Webster Tarpley saying:
“The mastermind of the attack must have been a sophisticated mind, provided with ample means not only to recruit fanatic kamikazes, but also highly specialized personnel.
I add one thing: it could not be accomplished without infiltrations in the radar and flight security personnel.”
Coming from a widely respected former head of state, Cossiga’s assertion that the 9-11 attacks were an inside job and that this is common knowledge among global intelligence agencies is illuminating.
It is one more eye-opening confirmation that has not been mentioned by America’s propaganda machine in print or on TV.
Nevertheless, because of his experience and status in the world, Cossiga cannot be discounted as a crackpot.

US to Develop New Hydrogen Bomb
by Ralph Vartabedian
The Energy Department will announce today a contract to develop the nation's first new hydrogen bomb in two decades, involving a collaboration between three national weapons laboratories, The Times has learned.
The new bomb will include design features from all three labs, though Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the Bay Area appears to have taken the lead position in the project. The Los Alamos and Sandia labs in New Mexico will also be part of the project.

Norway says Russia has increased military flights in the Arctic
The UK's Royal Air Force has launched fighter jets to intercept eight Russian military planes flying in airspace patrolled by Nato, UK officials say.
Four RAF F3 Tornado aircraft were scrambled in response to the Russian action, the UK's defence ministry said.
The Russian planes - said to be long-range bombers - had earlier been followed by Norwegian F16 jets.
Russia recently revived a Cold War-era practice of flying bombers on long-range patrols.
A Norwegian officer, Lt Col John Inge Oegland, told the BBC the Russian Tupolev Tu-95 Bear bombers flew in international airspace from the Barents Sea to the Atlantic, before turning back.
Two Norwegian F-16s shadowed them on Thursday morning and another two went up later, he said.
There have been several similar incidents in recent months, Lt-Col Oegland added.
"Norway is following the increased Russian activity in the far north with interest," he told the BBC News website.
He said the Russian flights were not causing alarm in Norway.   "Our systems are adequate," he said, when asked whether Norway was bolstering its security in the area.
Over time I was increasingly shocked by the speed and ease with which many intelligent and seemingly competent members of the CFR [ Council on Foreign Relations ] appeared to eagerly justify policies and actions that supported growing corruption.
The regularity with which many CFR members would protect insiders from accountability regarding another appalling fraud surprised even me.
Many of them seemed delighted with the advantages of being an insider while being entirely indifferent to the extraordinary cost to all citizens of having our lives, health and resources drained to increase insider wealth in a manner that violated the most basic principles of fiduciary obligation and respect for the law.
In short, the CFR was operating in a win-lose economic paradigm that centralized economic and political power.
I was trying to find a way for us to shift to a win-win economic paradigm that was — by its nature — decentralizing.

The reader can appreciate why Wall Street would welcome someone as accommodating as Gorelick at Fannie Mae.
This was a period when the profits rolled in from engineering the most spectacular growth in mortgage debt in U.S. history.
As one real estate broker said, “They have turned our homes into ATM machines.”
Fannie Mae has been a leading player in centralizing control of the mortgage markets into Washington D.C. and Wall Street.
And that means as people were rounded up and shipped to prison as part of Operation Safe Home, Fannie was right behind to finance the gentrification of neighborhoods.
And that is before we ask questions about the extent to which the estimated annual financial flows of $500 billion–$1 trillion money laundering through the U.S. financial system or money missing from the US government are reinvested into Fannie Mae securities.

James Forrestal
James Forrestal’s oil portrait always hung prominently in one of the private Dillon Read dining rooms for the eleven years that I worked at the firm. Forrestal, a highly regarded Dillon partner and President of the firm, had gone to Washington, D.C. in 1940 to lead the Navy during WWII and then played a critical role in creating the National Security Act of 1947.

He then became Secretary of War (later termed Secretary of Defense) in September 1947 and served until March 28, 1949.

Given the central banking-warfare investment model that rules our planet, it was appropriate that Dillon
partners at various times lead both the Treasury Department and the Defense Department.

Shortly after resigning from government, Forrestal died falling out of a window of the Bethesda Naval Hospital outside of Washington, D.C. on May 22, 1949.

There is some controversy around the official explanation of his death — ruled a suicide.

Some insist he had a nervous breakdown. Some say that he was opposed to the creation of the state of Israel.

Others say that he argued for transparency and accountability in government, and against the provisions instituted at this time to create a secrete “black budget.”

He lost and was pretty upset about it — and the loss was a violent one.

Since the professional killers who operate inside the Washington beltway have numerous techniques to get perfectly sane people to kill themselves, I am not sure it makes a big difference.

Approximately a month later, the CIA Act of 1949 was passed.

The Act created the CIA and endowed it with the statutory authority that became one of the chief components of financing the “black” budget — the power to claw monies from other agencies for the benefit of secretly funding the intelligence communities and their corporate contractors.

This was to turn out to be a devastating development for the forces of transparency, without which there can be no rule of law, free markets or democracy.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt appointed Forrestal as an administrative assistant on June 22, 1940, then nominated him as Undersecretary of the Navy six weeks later. In the latter post, Forrestal would prove to be very effective at mobilizing industrial production for the war effort.
He became Secretary of the Navy on May 19, 1944, following the death of his immediate supervisor Frank Knox from a heart attack. Forrestal then led the Navy through the closing year of the war and the demobilization that followed.   What might have been his greatest legacy as Navy Secretary was an attempt that came to nought.   He, along with Secretary of War Henry Stimson and Under Secretary of State Joseph Grew, in the early months of 1945, strongly advocated a softer policy toward Japan that would permit a negotiated face-saving surrender.   His primary concern was "the menace of Russian Communism and its attraction for decimated, destabilized societies in Europe and Asia", and, therefore, keeping the Soviet Union out of the war with Japan.   Had his advice been followed, Japan might well have surrendered before August 1945, precluding the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.   So strongly did he feel about this matter that he cultivated negotiation attempts that bordered closely on insubordination toward the President.
Forrestal opposed the unification of the services, but even so helped develop the National Security Act of 1947 that created the National Military Establishment (the Department of Defense was not created as such until August 1949), and with the former Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson retiring to private life, Forrestal was the next choice.
His 18 months at Defense came at an exceptionally difficult time for the U.S. military establishment:   Communist governments came to power in Czechoslovakia and China; West Berlin was blockaded, necessitating the Berlin Airlift to keep it going; the war between the Arab states and Israel after the establishment of Israel in Palestine; and negotiations were going on for the formation of NATO.   His reign was also hampered by intense interservice rivalries.
In addition, President Harry Truman constrained military budgets billions of dollars below what the services were requesting, putting Forrestal in the middle of the tug-of-war.   Forrestal was also becoming more and more worried about the Soviet threat.   Internationally, the takeover by the Communists of Eastern Europe, their threats to the governments of Greece, Italy, and France, their impending takeover of China, and the invasion of South Korea by North Korea would demonstrate the legitimacy of his concerns on the international front as well.

What Briody does not mention is allegations regarding Brown & Root's involvement in narcotics trafficking. Former LAPD narcotics investigator Mike Ruppert once described his break up with fiance Teddy — an agent dealing narcotics and weapons for the CIA while working with Brown & Root, as follows:
“Arriving in New Orleans in early July, 1977 I found her living in an apartment across the river in Gretna. Equipped with scrambler phones, night vision devices and working from sealed communiqués delivered by naval and air force personnel from nearby Belle Chasse Naval Air Station, Teddy was involved in something truly ugly.
She was arranging for large quantities of weapons to be loaded onto ships leaving for Iran.
At the same time she was working with Mafia associates of New Orleans Mafia boss Carlos Marcello to coordinate the movement of service boats that were bringing large quantities of heroin into the city.
The boats arrived at Marcello controlled docks, unmolested by even the New Orleans police she introduced me to, along with divers, military men, former Green Berets and CIA personnel.
“The service boats were retrieving the heroin from oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, oil rigs in international waters, oil rigs built and serviced by Brown and Root.
The guns that Teddy monitored, apparently Vietnam era surplus AK 47s and M16s, were being loaded onto ships also owned or leased by Brown and Root.
And more than once during the eight days I spent in New Orleans I met and ate at restaurants with Brown and Root employees who were boarding those ships and leaving for Iran within days.
Once, while leaving a bar and apparently having asked the wrong question, I was shot at in an attempt to scare me off.”

The Clinton Administration took the groundwork laid by Nixon, Reagan and Bush and embraced and blossomed the expansion and promotion of federal support for police, enforcement and the War on Drugs with a passion that was hard to understand unless and until you realized that the American financial system was deeply dependent on attracting an estimated $500 billion-$1 trillion of annual money laundering.
Globalizing corporations and deepening deficits and housing bubbles required attracting vast amounts of capital.
Attracting capital also required making the world safe for the reinvestment of the profits of organized crime and the war machine.
Without growing organized crime and military activities through government budgets and contracts, the economy would stop centralizing.
The Clinton Administration was to govern a doubling of the federal prison population.

9/11
By all accounts, the unprecedented events of September 11th, 2001 changed the way our country functions, and in turn, the world.
It is therefore critical that conscientious Americans, as well as people around the globe, understand these events in detail.
Unfortunately the official reports, including The 9/11 Commission Report and the NIST WTC Report, written by those working under the direction of the Bush Administration, have been proven to be elaborate cover-ups.
Film: 9/11 Revisited
September 11th Revisited is perhaps the most riveting film ever made about the destruction of the World Trade Center.
This is a powerful documentary which features eyewitness accounts and archived news footage that was shot on September 11, 2001 but never replayed on television.
Featuring interviews with eyewitnesses & firefighters, along with expert analysis by Professor Steven E. Jones, Professor David Ray Griffin, MIT Engineer Jeffrey King, and Professor James H. Fetzer.
This film provides stunning evidence that explosives were used in the complete demolition of the WTC Twin Towers and WTC Building 7.

Film: 9/11 Mysteries
90 minutes of pure demolition evidence and analysis, laced with staggering witness testimonials.
Moving from "the myth" through "the analysis" and into "the players," careful deconstruction of the official story set right alongside clean, clear science.
The 9/11 picture is not one of politics or nationalism or loyalty, but one of strict and simple physics. How do you get a 10-second 110-story pancake collapse?

Speaking at the AIPAC agenda   May 26, 2005
There are those who contend that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is all about Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.   This is absolute nonsense.
In truth, the history of the conflict is not over occupation, and never has been:  it is over the fundamental right of Israel to exist.
The greatest threat to Israel's right to exist, with the prospect of devastating violence, now comes from Iran.
For too long, leaders of both political parties in the United States have not done nearly enough to confront the Russians and the Chinese, who have supplied Iran as it has plowed ahead with its nuclear and missile technology....
In the words of Isaiah, we will make ourselves to Israel 'as hiding places from the winds and shelters from the tempests; as rivers of water in dry places; as shadows of a great rock in a weary land.'

See the home blow up.

Blowing up more Palestinian homes as a collective punishment is a daily Israeli practice (paid for by US money) to control Palestinians under occupation.
The life and death of Kamala Sawalha

A student leaves her house every night, leaving her two young children at home, spends the next several hours traveling by taxi and on foot to get to the university in the neighboring town — just 15 minutes away.

Kamala wanted very badly to study — otherwise, it would be hard to understand the sacrifice she made for it.

To get up before dawn every morning, to leave the babies with their grandmother, to spend hours on the road in the heat and cold, even when pregnant, in order to get to the campus on time; to risk being shot or subjected to endless humiliations around every turn, and then to travel the whole way back — in a taxi where possible and on foot where necessary....

“Suddenly we were facing the soldiers,” he recounts.  The jeep was parked on the left side of the road and its right door was open.  Kamala let out a long scream.  It was the last sound she would ever make.

At 11:30 A.M., they buried Kamala Sawalha in the town cemetery.

The father went through it and now the son is going through it and no one talks about it around the dinner table.

Furer is certain that what happened to him is not at all unique.

Here he was — a creative, sensitive graduate of the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts, who became an animal at the checkpoint, a violent sadist who beat up Palestinians because they didn’t show him the proper courtesy, who shot out tires of cars because their owners were playing the radio too loud, who abused a retarded teenage boy lying handcuffed on the floor of the Jeep, just because he had to take his anger out somehow.
